Viticulture in Ukraine occupies an important place in the structure of the agricultural industry. The development of viticulture and winemaking in our lands began in the VII-VI centuries. to n. thanks to the diligence of the ancient Greeks and Romans. The viticulture and wine-making industry of Ukraine reached the peak of its development in the 19th and 20th centuries. Since 1913, the area of vineyards in Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire, amounted to about 54 thousand hectares, and the gross harvest of grapes exceeded 79 thousand tons. However, due to the spread of phylloxera, the severe consequences of the First World War and the devastating Civil War, the area of vineyards decreased to 12.8 thousand hectares (4.5 times).
During the Soviet Union, viticulture and winemaking in Ukraine were considered branches of agriculture. In the USSR, Ukraine ranked first in vineyard area (400,000 hectares), and second in wine production. But later the so-called “anti-alcohol campaign”, during which 80,000 hectares of vineyards were destroyed, caused the largest losses in the history of the industry.
Today, in Ukraine, the viticulture industry has reached its greatest development in the Northern Black Sea region (Odesa, Kherson, and Mykolaiv regions) and Zakarpattia. Both large wineries and small amateur wineries are common in these regions. There are also very small regions of industrial winemaking — the southern regions of Vinnytsia, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi regions – the southern slopes of the Dniester valley. Here, small wineries produce wine from unique varieties that have already won silver and gold at international wine competitions. However, the total share of vineyards does not exceed 1% of the entire Ukrainian area.
Since 2022, Ukrvinprom has been an official partner-ambassador of the Foundation for Wine Culture and Civilizations of Wine (Fondation pour la Culture et les Civilizations du Vin). Now Ukrainian wines have the opportunity to be presented on a permanent basis in one of the largest and most influential centers of wine culture in the French city of Bordeaux.
